Snana Purnima is a sacred festival in Puri that marks the ceremonial bathing of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. It takes place on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha and serves as the official beginning of preparations for the Rath Yatra.
During this ritual, the deities are bathed with 108 pitchers of sanctified water drawn from the temple’s golden well, infused with herbs and sandalwood for purification. After the bath, they are adorned in Hati Besha, resembling Lord Ganesha, symbolizing wisdom and protection. Following this, the deities enter a 15-day Anasara period, where they are believed to recover from the intense bathing ritual before reappearing for the grand Rath Yatra.
This year, Snana Purnima falls on June 11, 2025, and will be followed by the Rath Yatra on June 27, 2025. The festival draws thousands of devotees to Puri, eager to witness this rare public appearance of the deities before their chariot journey.
