The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is one of the most revered Hindu temples in India and a significant pilgrimage site, especially for followers of Lord Vishnu. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Krishna, the temple is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage, which includes four sacred sites across India. This ancient temple, believed to have been built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, stands majestically on the eastern coast, drawing millions of devotees and tourists every year.
The temple is renowned for its unique architecture and the annual Rath Yatra, or Chariot Festival, where the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken out in grand chariots to Gundicha Temple, about 3 kilometers away. This vibrant festival attracts a massive gathering of devotees who believe that pulling the chariots brings divine blessings.
Inside the temple, the atmosphere is filled with devotion and spirituality. The main sanctum houses the wooden idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, which are replaced every 12 years in a ritual called Nabakalebara.
The temple complex is vast and includes several smaller shrines, each with its own significance. One notable feature is the kitchen, considered one of the largest in the world, where the famous Mahaprasad (sacred food offering) is prepared daily and distributed to thousands of devotees.
